Boating has long been a favorite pastime of Americans and vessels have become increasingly high tech. Boaters get out on the water as a form of recreation and usually are not expecting adverse conditions to ruin their day. Clear skies, calm seas, and good weather are the perfect prescription for a day out on the boat. However, most boat owners know that conditions can change almost in the blink of an eye and it is important to be prepared for any eventuality. As well, it always a good idea to be prepared to help fellow boaters should the occasion arise.

A great way to ensure you having everything needed is to keep an inventory listing of all items which should be on your boat before leaving the dock and to check off the items on that list before each trip. Essential marine equipment for safety to keep on any boat includes:

A copy of the Inland Navigation Rules, also referred to as Rules of the Road
Although these items are not required, they can be very handy to keep onboard:
First aid kit, full stocked
Flashlight(s)
Extra lengths of rope
Anchor
Bilge pump
Spare engine parts
VHF marine radio with Digital Selective Calling (DSC)
Global Positioning System (GPS)
Compass
Nautical charts
Emergency Position Indicator Radio Beacon (EPIRB)

Additionally, Federal Regulations state that for gasoline powered vessels these marine equipment items are also required: backfire arresters, ventilation system, a marine sanitation system, and pollution placards.
Before your next boating trip, be sure to include all of the boat and marine equipment listed here onboard your vessel. Be prepared for any type of weather and any type of incident. When there is less to worry about, it leaves more time to go out on the water and have fun.
