Boat Gear To Update Your Vessel

Whether you are buying your first used boat or wish to update the one you've owned for some time, there are certain pieces of hardware and boating gear you may want to replace. Some gear has a tendency to wear out due to age, usage, and the elements, while updating other pieces gives your vessel a newer, or more sporty, look. Either way, there are many cheap and easy items which can be replaced.

While many people claim, "don't sweat the small stuff", this is a good place to start. Check all the fasteners, such as the nuts and bolts and screws which attach the hardware to your vessel. They should be made from stainless steel, which resists corrosion from saltwater. Make sure all of the fasteners are in good working order and replace as necessary. Some go through the deck and will be harder to inspect and change, but with the help of another person it can be achieved.

Replacing Boat Hardware

The narrow bumper that lines the deck of your boat along the hull is referred to as the rub rail. This piece of boating gear often takes a lot of abuse from docks and replacing it can quickly freshen the appearance of your boat. It is a simple process which involves removing the screws holding it in place and replacing with a new rail. Take care in unfastening the old screws, however, as they may break off due to the effects of age and the elements.

Another cost-effective way to update your vessel is by replacing the cleats used for attaching lines; oftentimes they get loose or just fall off after years of use. Rather than tightening the old ones back into place, consider buying new, especially if the cleats are showing signs of rusting or pitting. It can be tricky to reach the bottom fasteners beneath the deck, so plan on the replacement process of this boating gear being a two-person operation.

On a powerboat, the walk-through windshield sometimes shows signs of age or abuse, as well. It can droop, refuse to properly close, or become loose from its supports. You could tighten the fasteners and attempt to readjust the supports on the windshield, but if it is truly in bad shape, it will be more time-effective to just purchase a new one. This is another way to update the looks of your vessel.

Boating gear replacement is a quite cost-effective way to make your vessel look like new and it also enhances its safety. Keeping a supply of various-sized stainless steel nuts, bolts, and other fasteners is always a good idea to ensure that your hardware works when it needs to. After all, the last time you want to realize something needs to be replaced or updated is when you are out in the middle of the water.
